About Us
Portfield Community Hall is managed by local residents and is available to everyone in the neighbouring area to use for meetings, sports, luncheons, exercise groups, private parties, and much more, whether their needs are on a week-to-week basis or for a one-off event.
The building itself has a long military history. In 1908, Fredrick James Evans Vaughan signed the land over to the 7th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, until such time that they ceased to exist. The Trustees pledged to use the land for the benefit of the town and neighbourhood of Christchurch.
In 1971, the Christchurch Sports and Community Association, a local charity, was formed with the view that they would take over the running of the Drill Hall. The building at that time was in a fairly bad state of repair and considerable alterations were needed to accommodate the Association’s vision of turning the building into a community hall. In 1977 this vision was finally realized.
The Association is still running the newly renamed Portfield Community Hall with a committee made up of local citizens for the benefit of Christchurch. They have big plans over the next few years to bring the building up to date to meet the ongoing needs of its users.
